Network Admin Journey began with a simple idea captured in our tagline, “Connecting Networks Innovatively”: if you learn something about networking the hard way, write it down clearly so the next person can learn it the easy way. What started as a personal, public record of moving from network administration toward network engineering has grown into a practical knowledge hub and a small consulting and mentoring practice.
Our story
Most network engineers do not start out designing routing architectures. They start by resetting switch ports, chasing a printer that dropped off the network, replacing a failed access point, or figuring out why “the internet is slow” on a Monday morning. That is network administration: keeping things running, often with limited documentation, limited budget and very little time to step back and ask why the network was built the way it was.
The road from that day-to-day work to network engineering is less about a single certificate and more about a change in thinking. An administrator asks, “How do I fix this?” An engineer also asks, “Why did this happen, how do I prevent it, and how should this network be designed so it scales?” Making that shift requires fundamentals, deliberate practice, good habits and a lot of patient troubleshooting.
Network Admin Journey was created to share that journey in public. Instead of keeping notes in a private notebook, the lessons were written up as guides: how subnetting actually works, why VLANs matter, how routing protocols make decisions, how to build a lab that lets you break things safely, and how to troubleshoot methodically rather than by guesswork. The goal was never to look impressive. It was to be useful to the person who is exactly where we once were. You can read the longer version of that philosophy in our article The Road from Network Admin to Network Engineer.
Over time, readers started asking for more than articles. Small businesses asked for help applying the same principles to their own offices. Learners asked for structured guidance and accountability while preparing for exams or a career change. That is how the consulting and mentoring side of Network Admin Journey came about: as a natural extension of the same work, done with the same care.
Our mission
Our mission is to make networking understandable, practical and secure for the people who depend on it, whether that is a learner building their first lab or a small business that simply needs its network to work reliably.
In practice, that means three things:
- Explain clearly. Networking has a reputation for jargon. We believe almost any concept can be explained in plain language without losing accuracy.
- Teach through practice. Reading is a start, but real understanding comes from configuring, testing, breaking and fixing things in a safe environment.
- Leave things better documented than we found them. Every engagement and every guide should leave the reader or client with something they can keep using after we are gone.
What we do
Network Admin Journey has two connected sides: free learning resources that anyone can use, and paid services for people and organizations who want hands-on help.
Free guides, tools and roadmap
Our blog publishes long-form guides on core networking topics, from subnetting and VLANs to OSPF, BGP, IPv6, monitoring and automation. Our network tools page offers interactive helpers for everyday tasks such as subnet calculations. The learning roadmap lays out a sensible order for building skills, so you spend less time wondering what to study next and more time actually studying it.
These resources are free to read and use. We fund them through the services described below, not through paywalls.
Consulting for small and mid-sized businesses
Many small organizations run networks that grew one device at a time. They work, mostly, until they do not. Our consulting services are designed for exactly that situation: assessing what you have, setting things up properly, hardening security and documenting the result. Engagements are delivered remotely by default, with on-site work available only by separate agreement. You can browse the full list on our services page.
Mentoring for aspiring network engineers
For learners, we offer structured one-to-one mentoring and lab design consultations. Mentoring is not about handing out answers. It is about helping you build a study rhythm, design effective labs, understand the concepts behind exam topics and develop the troubleshooting mindset that employers actually value.
Our values and principles
Everything we publish and every service we deliver follows a small set of principles. They are the habits that helped us grow, and they are the habits we try to pass on.
- Lab-first
- We test ideas in a lab before recommending them. Configuration examples in our guides are meant to be reproduced, and changes we propose for client networks are reasoned through and, where practical, validated before they touch production. If you want to start your own, our guide to building a home network lab is a good place to begin.
- Document everything
- A network that only one person understands is a risk. We write down what we find, what we change and why. Every paid engagement ends with documentation you own. Our network documentation guide explains the approach in detail.
- Security by default
- Security is not an add-on at the end of a project. Strong credentials, least privilege, segmentation, up-to-date firmware and sensible logging are part of how we design and configure from the start. Our firewall hardening checklist reflects that mindset.
- Plain language
- We explain what we are doing and why, in terms that make sense to the person paying for it or learning from it. If a recommendation cannot be explained clearly, it probably needs more thought.
- Vendor-neutral
- We do not sell hardware and we are not tied to any manufacturer. We recommend what fits your needs, budget and skills, and we are happy to work with the equipment you already have whenever it is reasonable to do so.
How we work
Whether you are a business ordering an assessment or a learner joining a mentorship program, our process follows the same basic shape:
- Listen first. We start by understanding your situation, goals and constraints. For services, that usually begins with a short intake questionnaire after you place an order or contact us.
- Gather facts. We review what exists today: devices, configurations, topology, pain points or, for learners, your current knowledge and study habits. We prefer evidence over assumptions.
- Plan and agree. We propose a clear plan with scope, timeline and deliverables, and we confirm it with you before any change is made.
- Do the work carefully. Changes are made methodically, with rollback options where relevant. Mentoring sessions follow a structured plan with hands-on lab work.
- Document and hand over. You receive written findings, diagrams, configuration notes or study materials, depending on the service, so the value remains with you.
- Follow up. Each service includes a defined period for questions and clarifications after delivery, as described on the individual product pages.
All services are delivered remotely by default using secure screen sharing, video calls and shared documents. On-site work is only available where explicitly agreed in writing.
Who we help
Our free resources are for anyone curious about networking. Our services are aimed at a few specific groups:
- Small and mid-sized businesses without a dedicated network team, such as offices, clinics, studios, retail locations and nonprofits, that need a reliable, secure network and clear documentation.
- Solo IT generalists and system administrators who look after the network alongside everything else and want a second pair of eyes or a structured improvement plan.
- Aspiring network engineers preparing for certifications such as the CCNA, or moving from help desk or administration roles into networking.
- Home lab enthusiasts who want to build a practical lab environment without wasting money on the wrong equipment.
If you are not sure whether we are a good fit, ask us. We would rather tell you honestly that a different kind of provider suits you better than sell you something you do not need.
What makes us different
There are many places to learn networking and many IT providers. Here is what we believe sets Network Admin Journey apart:
- Teaching is built into every service. We explain our reasoning so you understand your own network, not just receive a bill.
- Fixed, published prices. Each service has a clearly stated price and scope on its product page, so you know what you are paying for before you check out.
- Documentation you keep. Diagrams, findings and configuration notes are delivered in standard formats you can open and edit without proprietary software.
- Practical over theoretical. Our recommendations are prioritized by impact and effort, so a small team can actually act on them.
- Consistent with what we publish. The methods we use with clients are the same ones we explain openly in our free guides. You can read how we think before you ever pay us.
Our commitments to you
Trust is earned, so we prefer to make commitments we can keep rather than claims we cannot verify. Here is what you can expect:
- Honesty about scope. If something falls outside a service, we will say so and explain your options rather than quietly expanding the bill.
- No invented credentials or testimonials. We do not publish fake reviews, inflated statistics or made-up client stories. Our work and our writing should speak for themselves.
- Respect for your data and systems. We request only the access we need, use it only for the agreed work, and recommend that you rotate any credentials shared with us once the engagement ends. See our privacy policy for details.
- Accurate, reviewed content. Our guides are written to be correct and are updated when we find errors or when technology changes. Our editorial policy explains how.
- Clear terms. Our terms and conditions and refund policy are written to be read, not hidden.
- Accessibility. We aim to make our website usable by as many people as possible. Our accessibility statement explains our approach and how to report problems.
